New guy here. Today was the last day of a 5,000 snatch KB challenge I saw online and decided to try.

The challenge consisted of 1,000 reps/week for 5 weeks. I broke it up into 5 workouts of 200 reps each. Originally, I decided to to use the 16kg for the first 2 weeks, the 24kg for the second and the 32kg for the third. I got impatient into the first week, so I used all three all weeks.

Today, the last day, consisted of the following:

5 sets of 10 snatches (5L, 5R) each minute for five minutes w/ 16kg.

Then...

1 set of 10 w/ the 24kg.
2 sets of 20 w/24kg...then...
5 sets of 10 w/24kg, alternating w/ 5 sets of 3 pullups weighted with a 16kg KB.

Then...

5 sets of 10 w/ the 32kg. With 3 sets of 1 weighted pullups with the 32kg, and 2 sets of 1 weighted w/ the 24kg.

Glad tomorrow is rest day

There were days I wanted to quit, but I'm glad I stuck it out.

It definitely made me read about everything I could find on hand care. That was the big task...keeping the hands together.

This training log is a great idea...I'm going to be stealing workout idead from people in the near future.

Welcome Jim- please share what you've learned about keeping your hands in working order. That's an impressive number of snatches you've done.

Well, the best is, really, from an obvious source: Pavel's ETK. The section on hand care is invaluable.

The first thing is to keep the calluses from getting too big. I filed them down with a nail file (or some kind of girly nail-care file) every day. Then, I used a lotion called Corn Huskers several times a day.

I found that allowing a callus to get tall enough to pinch or tear was unacceptable. Blisters formed every now and then, and when they did, I left them alone and by the next day they were gone, as long as I used plenty of lotion and left them alone.

Under no circumstances did I pop a blister.

I taped every now and then, but usually only around my fingers. I tried to tape my palms up, but that usually ended up in a ball, and then caused a worse blister. There is some fancy taping technique I saw where you tape your palms lengthwise. I tried it, and it worked with the 24kg, but not the 32kg for some reason. It also took about 15 minutes to do, and I didn't have the patience for it.

One trick is to only use your fingers to hook the KB during the swing portion of the snatch. Hard to describe, but if you try to grip the KB hard, it will rip your hands to shreds.

I used lifting chalk all the time.

Oh, and the KBs I used were 35lb Aders, a 24kg USA Kettlebell (cast iron) and an unknown brand 32kg, with a thick, rough handle. The 24kg has a very rough, porous handle, but I'm too lazy to sand or file the edges off.

I think I might reward myself with a new 24kg before too long.

Nothing new from me as far as hand care goes, that someone smarter hasn't already written somewhere.

It works with a variety of exercises, and it totally wipes you out.

The main thing is that they are similar in movement, but one is a strength move, and the other is an explosive power move.

I suppose you could also flip the idea over and do the power move first. A training tip I got from a Paul Chek seminar is to simply reverse your workout if things get stale.

I did a bodyweight back squat/ heavy kettlebell swing superset a few times and it was also a killer.

Give it a shot!
